Tesla Charger Installation in Calgary
In today’s economy, we really do understand the temptation to save both money and time in every area of life. DIY YouTube videos are a real temptation for everything from ‘tile your own bathtub’ to ‘make your own sourdough’ just to get a little bit of an edge.
And – to be honest- some of those DIY videos are really helpful.
There are actually several videos out there that make a DIY Tesla charger installation look like a simple weekend project you can knock out after a trip to the electrical aisle at the hardware store.
The truth is that high-amperage charging puts a lot of thermal stress on your home’s wiring. Frankly, the math on load calculations isn’t something you want to mess around with without the proper education, tools and ability to troubleshoot.
In this blog, we want to address the real risks you’re taking if you decide to go the DIY or uncertified Tesla installer route.
At Zeus, we’re pretty low-key and easy to get along with, but we’re sticklers for the technical side and the rules that exist. Getting a proper Tesla charger installation done is critical for your family’s health and safety.
One Charger for Every Tesla Model
While all Teslas use the same North American Charging Standard (NACS) port, they don’t all charge at the same speed and capacity.
Model 3 and Model Y
These are the most common EVs on Calgary roads today.
- Model 3 (Rear-Wheel Drive): This model’s onboard charger is limited to 32 amps. Even with a 60-amp circuit, the car only draws what it needs. You get about 48 km of range per hour.
- Model 3 (Long Range/Performance) & Model Y: These models handle the full 48 amps from a Tesla Wall Connector, providing about 71 km of range per hour—ideal for quick top-ups on cold mornings.
The Model S, Model X and Cybertruck
The Model S and Model X have larger battery packs and also draw 48 amps from a home circuit.
The Cybertruck has the largest battery pack in the lineup, so a high-speed home charger makes a real difference. A standard household outlet adds only about 1–2% of charge overnight ( not enough to keep it as a daily driver) so a properly installed Tesla Wall Connector is what gives it the charging speed it needs.
An Extra Note on Cybertruck Powershare
Cybertruck also supports Tesla Powershare, which lets the truck’s battery power your home during a power outage.
This is a separate, more involved project than a standard charger install, with its own equipment and eligibility requirements:
Because it ties directly into your home’s main electrical service, a Powershare install involves additional permitting and code-compliance steps beyond a typical charger job.
If you’re a Cybertruck owner interested in home backup, reach out, and we’ll help you confirm whether your home qualifies and walk you through what’s involved.
Go With a Pro!
So you know why a Tesla charger is the best option for charging all the models, now let’s chat about why you need a professional, certified installation.
Under the latest 2024 Canadian Electrical Code (CEC), installing an EV charger requires a professional load calculation to ensure your house doesn’t blow a main fuse when you’re charging your Tesla.
The Importance of Certification
Tesla charger installations require specialized knowledge of not only Calgary’s unique power and weather conditions, but also membership in the Tesla Partner Program, which includes eLearning Modules, the Powerwall Exam (passing with a score of 80% or higher), and all product update training as it rolls out.
We also have access to the Tesla One platform, which lets us:
- Commission the devices (syncing them with the Tesla ecosystem).
- Register the warranty for our customers (more on that below).
- Order hardware directly from Tesla.
A note on warranty
Choosing a Tesla Certified Installer safeguards your coverage. The Tesla Wall Connector has a 4-year residential warranty, but improper installation or by uncertified personnel can void it. Using a certified installer maintains full warranty coverage.
We did the work and passed all the checks to ensure we are credentialed experts. We have access to everything needed to set you and your Tesla up safely and in full compliance with code.
