Home EV Charging vs Public Charging Cost in Calgary

Home EV Charging vs Public Charging Cost in Calgary

If you’ve recently joined Calgary’s growing community of electric vehicle (EV) owners, we want to congratulate you!

We know it feels good to leave insanely fluctuating gas prices in the rearview mirror (driving pun 100% intended), but switching to an EV can also raise a few practical questions about your day-to-day driving.

You might have found this blog by googling ‘home EV charging vs public charging’ or ‘how do home EV charging and public charging costs compare?’ because you’re wondering if it’s worth installing a dedicated charger in your garage or just sticking with the public chargers around the city.

Are there any actual differences between waiting for an EV charge and the long gas lines you used to queue up for in your ‘fossil fuel era’?

Isn’t all EV charging cheaper than gas? Does it really make a difference to your budget and quality of life to charge in public or charge at home?

At Zeus, we’re here to help answer your questions and decide exactly what your best EV charging options are in Calgary. Let’s dive in.

It’s always about the math.

To get an accurate picture of the numbers, we need to look more closely at how Calgary’s local rates and climate affect the cost of charging your EV, and then we’ll break down the differences between charging at home and charging at a public station.

Home charging

At a residential home, you’ll pay residential electricity rates.

In Calgary (in July 2026), fixed electricity rates are typically around 12 cents per kWh (plus local fees).

For an EV with an 82 kWh battery, charging from empty to full in your garage will cost roughly $10 to $13.

So if you drive a typical Calgary commute of about 1,500 kilometres per month (not to mention other activities and events you might have during evenings or weekends), your home electricity bill will increase by about $35 to $50 per month.

When that amount is compared to the $200+ most people spend on fuel, the math definitely mathing.

Public charging

While it is true that some public Level 2 stations are free or very low-cost, they also come with the caveat that they are slooooow.

The typical flow gives only about 35-40 km of range per hour. (For reference, many gasoline vehicles have barely more than 40 km left after the fuel light goes on!)

If you need a bit more peace of mind, you’ll likely need to find a Level 3 fast charger, which typically charges by the minute or by kWh and can cost as much as $20 per hour.

A full charge at a DC Fast Charger can easily cost you $30 to $40. When we look at the raw numbers, premium public charging fees make on-the-road charging up to three times more expensive than plugging in at home.

More real-life scenarios

The money trail definitely favours home charging over public, but there are even more practical and convenient benefits for Calgary residents to switch to an at-home Level 2 charger.

Calgary has 4 actual seasons.

Dark, freezing, windy January mornings and evenings are a part of real life in Calgary.

At old-fashioned gas pumps, you would wait in your idling car to stay warm. After quickly pumping your fuel, you’d hop back in, restart the engine and heater, and rush off to your next destination. (Are you nostalgic yet?)

With public charging time estimates, you’re looking at parking and plugging in for 15-40 minutes, and either sitting in the cold parking lot or finding a place to stay warm.

Given the option to simply pull into your garage, plug in your car, and walk into a warm house knowing your car will be fully charged the next morning…?

You have to admit that is waaaay more relaxing option.

You want your EV investment to last.

You do have the Level 3 charger option to offset the time costs of slow public chargers, but doing so too often can accelerate your EV’s battery degradation, potentially requiring a replacement sooner than expected.

A  home Level 2 charger delivers a steady, safe flow of electricity every time. Your battery isn’t stressed and maintains its optimal long-term health.

The Zeus difference

As much sense as it makes to switch from public charging to home charging fully, EV drivers must get the right company for the install, and that’s where Zeus Electrical Services comes in.

Our company’s roots stem from a lifelong interest in the trade and extensive experience in utilities and infrastructure. We also own and drive EVs ourselves.

We really understand the technology inside and out and can ensure that any upgrades you make to your home or business are safe, efficient, and fit seamlessly into your daily life.

Still on the fence? Here’s a quick breakdown of why Level 2 EV charging at home is so much better than a public charger in Calgary.

  • The savings are real: Home charging costs about $10 to $13 per full charge, compared with $30 to $40 at public fast chargers. Again: math for the win.
  • So convenient:  Plug your car in overnight and wake up to a full battery every morning—no driving to a station or waiting around required.
  • No winter ‘fuel lines’: Skip the -30°C parking lots. Charge your car in your garage and preheat it before you even step outside.
  • A happier battery: Gentle Level 2 home charging helps preserve your battery’s health over time, unlike frequent, harsh DC fast charging.
  • Actual time saved: Spend zero minutes of your active day waiting for your car to power up.
